  26.     I wanted to take this time to point out something to those folks who
  27.     are just now considering getting into a CD-ROM unit, and are intending
  28.     to do so using ExtenDOS.  While I myself find this to be a most ex-
  29.     -cellent program, it unfortunately does have a limitation.  The ffollow-
  30.     -ing information is for those people who DO NOT AS YET have a CD-ROM
  31.     unit:

  33.     In Message #163 of this topic, Marlin refers to the fact that:
  34.  
  35.    ".....am not suggesting that an ORIGINAL ICD host adaptor works with
  36.     ExtenDOS."
  37.  
  38.     Marlin is more than correct.  For the last 2+ weeks, with the aid of
  39.     some friends of mine, as well as with various set-ups and c    config-
  40.     -urations, we have discovered the following:
  41.  
  42.    1) The program will work according to what Roger has stated in the
  43.       accompanying manual-----that an ICD >AdSCSI< host  adaptor is the
  44.       preferent host, when connecting thru a DMA port.
  45.  
  46.     To further clarify, my friends and I have discovered (!) that only
  47.     thease specific items work:
  48.  
  49.     ICD AdSCSI---ICD AdSCSI PLUS----The Link (I or II)----SUPRA host
  50.  
  51.     Note that these are specific for hook-up to the DMA slot.
  52.  
  53.     Granted, the Link will work with your ORIGINAL ICD host, but that
  54.     really defeats the purpose of having this particular host, as you will
  55.     >DEFINITELY< need one of the afore-mentioned in order to use your CD
  56.     unit.
  57.  
  58.     2) Roger and I have gone back and forth regarding this in e-mail, and
  59.        while he has been the pillar of help in trying to get it to work,
  60.        he has admitted to me prior that the program was checked against
  61.        that which he had available to test it with (i.e., hosts he had at
  62.        his place).  As such, those of us with ORIGINAL and/or Advantage
  63.        hosts by ICD are basically left out, save for enpending to upgrade.
  64.        Roger informs me that this has to do with some kind of "ICD trick".\
  65.        As I know not what that is, I am left only knowing that my set-up wi
  66.        ---will not work, UNLESS I acquire an NEWER host, or else have a
  67.        Supra.

  69.      3) Roger has informed me tonite that he will be commenting on this in
  70.         the Pro manual.  While I myself have asked to see an advance peek
  71.         of the specifics, I still felt the need to post this info here, in
  72.         case there are others out there, with ORIGINAL hosts, who are con-
  73.         -templating CD units.
  74.  
  75.      Product notwithstanding, it is better that everyone know this up front,
  76.      BEFORE they go for it, rather than buy, and end up having to shell out
  77.      more for something that they already have, but not total.

  102.   Re: your post and the ICD adapter point. Nice info but I'd simply like to
  103. point out that the need to upgrade should be no real matter. Let me make it
  104. clear that I am not arguing with your post or trying to be hostile in any way.
  105. It is good to point out that if someone has one of the older versions that
  106. they be completely aware of the fact they would need to upgrade their
  107. equipment in order to operate a CD-Rom drive. This should not however keep
  108. them from doing so.
  109.  
  110.  In the PC world they have needed to upgrade whole systems, several times. We
  111. get so cheep minded we fail to recognize this fact. If you want CD, spend the
  112. money, get the upgrade and continue to have fun.

  148.    Anyway.....yes, I am familiar with the PC end of continuous upgrading,
  149.    having only recently done so with a Sound Blaster card (orignal did not
  150.    do CD-ROM, either!!).  At any rate, this message was an intend for some-
  151.    -one considering, but working with fixed funds (as a lot of people in
  152.    this platform appear to be!! :0 ).  Glad you caught that part of why I '
  153. posted the message.

  156.    Roger's product, as it is indeed not only one that fills a needed func-

  192. On some SUN workstations the CD-ROMs are made to read only 512 byte sectors
  193. instead of 2048 byte sectors.  Before the Rock Ridge extensions to the ISO-
  194. 9660 there were too many limits to use ISO-9660 effectively on UNIX machines.
  195. So before that time they would just dump a hard disk to a CD which most use
  196. 512 bytes per sector.

  205.   I've got PageStream set up to read the 500 BitStream fonts directly from the
  206. CD (a cheap NEC-25 single-speed unit). The process of installing the fonts
  207. into PageStream's font manager was glacially slow. But the normal use of the
  208. fonts is not much slower than using the fonts on the hard drive. It takes a
  209. split second longer to retrieve the data when you first use a font, but there
  210. are no noticeable delays after that. Loading the program seems to take no
  211. longer than before.

  219. I have literally hundreds of fonts in my PageStream "suitcases" by directing
  220. them to the CD.  I've _noticed_ no slowdown whatsoever. There may be a slight
  221. delay accessing the fonts from CD, but it hasn't been enough to make me
  222. notice.  I'm using a doublespeed... there may be a more significant difference
  223. if you're using a single...

  258. UNIDRIVE) for that particular CD-ROM.  Additional details would be helpful in
  259. a diagnosis (disk name, ExtenDOS version, etc.).

  293. up on this unit.  If you don't mind me asking, how is your discount
  294. calculated?  Where I work I pay 10% above dealer cost.

  319.   Sun (the workstation vendor) distribute CD-ROM drives that, by default,
  320. address 512-byte sectors rather than the standard 2048-byte. This tends to
  321. confuse most other systems that expect 2048-byte sectors.

  410. All the Corel Photo CD's can also be read on the NEC-25 also as they are
  411. written in 9660 rather than XA format.

  413. Photo Show Pro also has a Corel mode for reading them as if they were normal
  414. Kodak Photo CD discs.

  422.   No prob. I just wanted to help urge folks to splerge a bit and darn the
  423. torpedoes, full steam ahead! There aren't all that many CDs available for the
  424. Atari, but it does make certain applications much nicer to deal with. Mostly
  425. what we now have is access to photo work, clip art and font libraries. Sounds
  426. like mostly DTP stuff to me, a decidedly smaller Atari market.
  427.  
  428. I do wish there was some way to get at some of them other really nice CDs.
  429. I've heard about this MOST reader, but I have no intention of dropping $375 on
  430. the CD to see if works.

  442.       Yes, to expend that amount of funds with no real proofing that it will
  443. work right out of the casing would be considered gutsy.  Unless of courcourse,
  444. you could >RETURN< the CD, or else try it in-house at the dealer's where you
  445. can buy it.  I am fortunate in that I have a dealer who pretty much tries out
  446. everything that he brings into his store (take a >BIG<
  447.  bow, Steve Kipker, of Steve's Software!! :0 ).  This way, I know what I am am
  448. spending the BIG $$ on BEFOREHAND.  Heck, he even goes so fair as to allow me
  449. HANDS-ON with most all that I am interested in, and has yet to ste ---steer me
  450. towards something that I would not get much use out of.  And I do pride myself
  451. on being a >HEAVY DUTY< user of my Atari system(s)!! :)
  452.  
  453.     Like I said before, and will maintain continuously.........it seems a
  454. shame to have to expend MORE $$ for something that I already have, and have
  455. been using for some time, with no problem, only to have to change it out fo ---
  456. for a NEWER model.  Had I of known this when I started out on this
  457. "adventure" into CD-ROM, I would not have been caught short, or else used up --
  458. up so much time to get to the newer host.  I look at it like I do my car; I
  459. have a 1968 Buick.  It runs fine; it's not as good looking as it was when I
  460. first bought it, but hey, it does what I want from it---it runs, gives me  no
  461. real problem, and gets me where i want to be, with little maintanence and ---
  462. and attention.  The day it finally croaks, then I will go after something ---
  463. something else.  Until then, why replace what does fine??  Also: if the
  464. replreplacement comes with new features, then it is a sign of its time of
  465. being manufactured.  As time does not stand still, so also will manufactur- -
  466. ers not stand on the old.  Anything that can make a GOOD product even more
  467. appealing, or EVEN MORE better, will always find someone interested (myself
  468. included).

  475.     A question, please:  I notice that in Message #189, Greg points out  that
  476. the NEC-25 can read Corel Photo CD's.
  477.  
  478.     I would appreciate it greatly if someone would give me a briefing on what
  479. PHOTO CD is, how it works, what it does, by itself AND for us.  I have sseen
  480. the words KODAK Photo CD several times, and only know that this is a process
  481. wherein one can transfer photos to a CD.  I am certain there is more ---more
  482. to it than just this, and would appreciate any and all remarks from everybody
  483. who is MORE in the know about this than me.  THANKS!!!

  491. At least one of the Corel PhotoCD disks has a picture that will look familiar
  492. to those who've seen screenshots for KASUMI NINJA for the Jaguar -- the
  493. background with the natural rock arch was actually 'lifted' by HMS.

  501.         I bought Compton's M.O.S.T. Disk "Movies on TV and Videocassette" for
  502. $30 at MicroCenter and it works pretty well with the current version of the
  503. Atari M.O.S.T. driver.  You can read reviews of any of the 19,000 or so movies
  504. included or cross reference via the 400 or so entries of persons involved in
  505. movies.  The search feature doesn't work yet, but there's supposed to be an
  506. update out in the next two weeks.  I think this is a software product we need
  507. to support as it is one of the few that allows us to access CD-ROM data via a
  508. database front end.
  509.  
  510.         There are also available text books on CD-ROM.  I've got one called
  511. "Desktop Bookshop" that contains about 409 MB of text in both compressed and
  512. uncompressed forms.
  513.  
  514.         To quote the packaging, "Included are works by Plato, Shakespeare,
  515. Mark Twain, Aristotle, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, Buddah, Lord Byron,
  516. Darwin, Martin Luther King, Kipling, Lincoln, Jack London, Plato (they must
  517. really like him), Jules Verne, Voltaire, Thoreau, H.G. Wells, Oscar Wilde, and
  518. many more.

  520.         Hans Christian Andersen fairytales, Aesop's Fables, and Lewis Carroll
  521. adventures will delight the entire family.  The works of Charles Dickens are
  522. here, along with Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Silas Marner, and The King

  599.   Good question re photoCD! Briefly, photoCD is the following:

  601.  1. a special graphics file format which stores a number of versions
  602.     of the same photo in different resolutions in the same file
  603.  2. a CD that is written in XA mode (different at a hardware level
  604.     from the mode used for standard CD-ROMs), but using the ISO9660
  605.     file system format (the _same_ as standard CD-ROMs). These are
  606.     usually produced by Kodak (or another photo finisher) from the
  607.     roll of film (or slides) that you give them.
  608.  
  609. Corel CDs of photos use the graphics file format but not the XA hardware mode;
  610. photoCDs from your photo finisher use both.

  623. Photo CD is indeed a medium where you can have your photos placed on a CD ROM.
  624. Developing charges are not too bad, about $25 for 2 rolls of film (48 shots).
  625. For this price you get one (count them, 1) CD ROM and a bunch of color prints
  626. not quite 2cm square as a visual index.  One time I got my ROM in a cardboard
  627. tacky holder, another time it came in the regular jewl box.
  628.  
  629. The advantage is that the photo info is now digital so you can use it with
  630. your computer.  With photo show you can make a very nice slide show, even move
  631. it over to video tape to send to relatives.  Now instead of viewing a second
  632. set of prints, they are viewing a TV show with your slides 19, 27, 35 inches
  633. diagonal (whatever the size of their TV is) and with a narration by you.  This
  634. is an excellent way to bring the far away relatives up to date on what is
  635. happening in your life.
  636.  
  637. Another advantage is you can make prints from the ROM, so in a way it is an
  638. archival storage device.
  639.  
  640. Finally, and here is the good part, you can manipulate this digitized data
  641. with paint programs.  You can touch up a smile, change the color of a coat or
  642. put yourself in a photo with Nixon.  The possibilities are endless and limited
  643. only  to your software and imagination.  You and your family could be part of
  644. a video game or be a desktop background photo.  Anything is possible.

  646. My 12 year old likes to use COMPO's studio convert to swap heads around and
  647. then print out the photos on the laser printer.  She keeps asking me when I am
  648. going to upgrade to color!

  661. tracks on the CD and they have different formats.  There is the Yellow Book
  662. standard (CD-ROM) and it defines a track type.  This includes sub-header, sync
  663. and user data, etc.

  667.  It is based something like the above but not exactly the same.  Then comes CD-
  668. ROM/XA (Sony/Philips/Microsoft) standard that defines the track somewhat

  670. sub-header, sync and user data is different. The XA standard is basically for
  671. compressed Audio (ADPCM), data and video picture data.

  673. Then there is the CD-Bridge format.  This format is what Kodak's PhotoCD uses
  674. and it is built on top of CD-ROM/XA standard.  It is modified slightly so it
  675. can work on CD-I machines as well.  The main difference is the user data is
  676. only 2324 bytes compared to 2048 bytes in CD-ROM/XA (mode 2, form 1).  The
  677. 2324 bytes is for CD-ROM/XA (mode 2, form 2). There is probably more details
  678. missing on the EDC (error detection code) and ECC (error correction code) but
  679. that is main issue.

  681. One can think of XA as an extension to the CD-ROM standard as well.

  776.         Okay.  The ultimate goal of the M.O.S.T. driver (as I understand it)
  777. is to allow access to Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia, but at the moment
  778. that is for a future time which may be a long way off.  At this point the
  779. M.O.S.T. driver theoretically supports about eighteen disks that are in
  780. Compton's current catalog in the M.O.S.T. format.  Compton's has about 100
  781. titles in their Spring 1994 catalog, but only about 18 of them are in the
  782. M.O.S.T. format.
  783.  
  784.         For portability the M.O.S.T. format currently seems to support text,
  785. pictures, audio and video.  Each title has check boxes on the back saying
  786. which of these features that particular title includes.  For example, the
  787. "KGB/CIA World Factbook" includes only text and pictures (maps and charts) and
  788. the "Movies on TV and Videocassette" includes only text.  Naturally the
  789. catalog doesn't detail which titles include which media. <sigh>
  790.  
  791.         The beauty of the M.O.S.T. format is that Compton's can produce one
  792. disk and one set of packaging and produce a title that can be used on Windows,
  793. Dos, Macintosh and the Sony Multimedia CD-ROM player.  It's interesting that
  794. the catalog doesn't mention that the M.O.S.T. disks are usable on the
  795. Macintosh, but the label on the box does.  And oh, by the way, there's this
  796. crazy man (Hi Brian!<grin>) who's supporting the M.O.S.T. format for the Atari
  797. ST, but you probably won't find this out from Compton's.
  798.  
  799.         Compton's seems to have taken the attitude that Brian is welcome to do
  800. this without their help.  If he can figure out how to read their index files
  801. he'll have a better program, if he can't it's no skin off their nose.  His
  802. current version supports seeing the table of contents, reading selected
  803. articles from it and reading the "cross reference section" as found in the
  804. "Movies" disk where you can look at an entry for an actor and get a list of
  805. movies which can be clicked on to see the review of each movie.  This is
  806. hypertext.  In a release to be coming out "real soon now" it should also
  807. support the pictures as found in the "KGB/CIA World Fact Book". (These tend to
  808. be small GIF pictures of line drawn maps and charts.)
  809.  
  810.         The important thing here is that this driver will give us the ability
  811. to access these hypertexts off CD-ROM and get the benefits of this information
  812. without having to go out and purchase a P.C.  I bought the "Movies" disk at a
  813. Micro Center in Atlanta and I've seen both "The Doctor's Book of Home
  814. Remedies" and "The Pill Book" here in Macon (85 miles south of Atlanta) in an
  815. Office Depot store.
  816.  
  817.         Note that the M.O.S.T. driver requires ExtenDOS or a similar low-level
  818. CD-ROM driver in order to work.

  889. Interesting you should mention this.  Just the other day I was looking at the
  890. directory on a Corel Professional Photos CD and found that there was only one
  891. file for each of the pictures.  There appeared to be nothing in hidden
  892. directory listings, and the file size of each pic was relatively small (4 MB
  893. if I recall correctly). This lead me to believe that the Corel disks do not
  894. feature all PhotoCD resolutions.
  895.  
  896. Interestingly enough, I have found a couple CDs that have data in hidden
  897. directories that normally would be inaccessable.  I'm unsure as to whether or
  898. not the PeeCee "install" routines would install these hidden files, but I'd

  911. From what I recall PhotoCD pictures are compressed in the file.  If all the
  912. pictures were expanded to full size is around 18 to 25 megs if  memory serves
  913. me correctly.
  914.  
  915. If you have hidden directories that could indicate some problems when the disc
  916. was created.  Sommetimes when the disc was first written there was a slight
  917. "glitch" during the writing phase.  This can happen when  the data being read
  918. from the source (usually a hard drive) can not keep up with the CD-Writer and
  919. so garbage is placed instead.  If this occurs in the right place you can have
  920. a new disc you can use as a frisbee. <g>
  921.  
  922. Another cause for "hidden" directories are discs that do follow the  ISO-9660
  923. format to the letter.  Commodore CTV/CD-32 discs come to mind immediately,
  924. etc.  Some discs were included specifically with certain drivers that can
  925. handle true ISO-9660 and extensions.  One good example is having directories
  926. deeper than 8 levels deep.  This MS-DOS limit was included in ISO-9660 and
  927. some CD-Writer software allows one to over-ride or ignore this limit of 8
  928. levels.  If the driver limits itself completely to ISO-9660 standard then
  929. these "extensions" will not be compatible. This is especially true of Unix ISO-
  930. 9660 discs since Unix does not have limits when it comes to depths of
  931. directories and most CD-Writer software allows the user/operator to override
  932. this "feature" on Unix machines.
  933.  
  934. Another problem could be when the disc image is created on the source machine
  935. it could include non ISO-9660 compliant information.  And since this is not
  936. always checked when the disc is created it can result in compatibility
  937. problems on many systems.

  992. but it only took a lack of response to put me back in the original message and

  995. entering REPLY mode, I did a paste from the clipboard with ALT V.  As I said,
  996. I never did much with the Clipboard before, so that method of copying a
  997. message into the Aladdin REPLY screen would never have ocurred to me.

  1196. Good point! The NEC 210 is MacWarehouse catalog number BND 0316. The catalog
  1197. photo shows "Power User" as the brand name, but my drive and all the others of
  1198. friends who have ordered it do not have a brand name on any area of the unit.
  1199. The SCSI inquiry (built into ICD's software) provides the NEC 210 info, and a
  1200. check with NEC confirms that it is indeed a 210, which is an OEM model sold to
  1201. manufacturers who then put their own name on it. Apparently MacWarehouse has
  1202. been selling so many that it hasn't had the time to put the brand on the pony,
  1203. so to speak.

  1205. It comes with a cable (tell them you want a STANDARD cable, not a Mac cable)
  1206. and a terminator. Nice deal, since the cable is worth $8 to $20, and the
  1207. terminator is $5 to $20 (!) at stores.

  1230. It's on our highly suggested list and Toad's $199 is a good one for the drive.

  1247. suffle and repeat selected.  Do I have conflicts or is this normal?  My other

  1306. cables or terminators for their $279 external version. So the big question
  1307. becomes is the $199 MacWarehouse drive the internal or external version? If it
  1308. is the internal version then there is negligble difference in price and I will
  1309. deal with Toad, however if it is the external version then there is a $100
  1310. dollar difference. Given that my Loyalty can be swayed for a Choclate Chip
  1311. cookie, $100 can influence my decision.

  1475. polled by the ICD software; I have it blocked out in the booter. ExtenDOS does
  1476. the accessing.

  1479. speed drive is $200 more than the NEC 210 I have, and for *that* I could get a
  1480. second NEC 210 (which I plan to do anyway ... why switch disks?). ExtenDOS

  1522.      The test report I saw (in a Mac mag I believe) had a big speed increase
  1523. in double speed drives over single speed, a smaller increase in going to
  1524. triple speed, and little increase (and sometimes even a decrease) in speed
  1525. with some of the quatra speed drives. Sounded like the best $/speed ratio was
  1526. with the double with the triple speed getting better as thier price approches
  1527. dble spped price.

  1734. Basically it allows you to read the audio data over the SCSI bus rather than
  1735. sending it out the audio outputs.  You can write a program to save the data
  1736. (audio) into a file for further processing or conversion.  The Toshiba 3401
  1737. has this feature and so do some of the newer drives.

  1892. before and while music is on. Shutting the .ACC window ends the noise. No big
  1893. deal, but I wondered if you might have any idea what causes it.

  1990. See Flat, Peter demo'd the SARA program at the Sept. TAF meeting. It's an
  1991. application to read the custom format of some IBM CD's. I forget the brand,
  1992. but it's like the M.O.S.T. program. Perhaps someone here will know from  this
  1993. hint: I recall one of the disks he demo'd the program with was the 'Time Man
  1994. of the Year' CD-Rom.
  1995.  
  1996. You see, a lot of these 'informational' CD's simply have one giant text  file
  1997. with a second index file, and then a bunch of pictures that are  called up as
  1998. you read the text. SARA is a driver to interperate the index file and extract
  1999. the appropriate section of text (plus pictures). It's  still a little rough
  2000. around the edges but Peter mentioned that he plans to release it as shareware
  2001. when it's done. It should be a nice addition to ExtenDOS and the M.O.S.T.
  2002. program.

  2060. The Magnavox is a VERY slow CD rom drive. We had one hooked up to a PC here a
  2061. couple of years ago and I believe it used a proprietary interface so it would
  2062. be a "no go" for the Atari.

  2067. find than a SCSI cable. If you are going to get a custom cable done, just tell

  2070. made too. The SCSI-2 connector takes up less space on the back of a Falcon
  2071. than a SCSI connector would.

  2106. and free of all other cables. Still had the pop plus a loud hum that wasn't
  2107. there before. <sigh>. I returned it to its former position which reduced the
  2108. hum some and I reduced it to inaudiblity with the Sound CPX. It's just too
  2109. late to try a audio CD now.

  2171. I just got ExtenDOS and a NEC 210 drive from Toad.  I really like having all
  2172. of that stroage available.  It only took me about 20 minutes to test and set
  2173. up the whole shootin' match.  Even thought the manual was small it had the
  2174. answer to all of my questions in setting up the drive on my TT.  However, I
  2175. set the 'B' switch to 32 in the config files.  Initially it was set to 12 and
  2176. I was unable to go more than 3 folders deep in my CD ROM.  If anyone else has
  2177. this problem, change the B setting to a higher number.

  2283. properly once the accessory window is closed. I'll be posting a fix here as

  2322. You "hit the nail on the head" with the as soon as you close the window while
  2323. using the suffle and repeat.  I found that all I need to do is open the CD
  2324. AUDIO window and everything goes fine with repeat. As far as shuffle goes I
  2325. stop using it. The CD would stop and wait for me to open the window.
  2326.  
  2327. For the EJECT, I was using PAGESTREAM and moving a graphic from off the page
  2328. to on to the page.  Grabbed it with the hand and when I released it the CD
  2329. came out.  Funny :)  I know you don't have PGS and I have only had it happen
  2330. one more time.  So it's not repeatable.

  2332. Anyway, I have a TOSHIBA 3401.  All the other features of the ACC works great.

  2370. Microsoft RIFF (resource interchange file format) specification. There was a

  2427. ISO-9660 format, instead of _real_ Photo-CD format, you don't even need an XA

  2477. I got a double speed NEC drive and have been pleasantly surprised with how
  2478. slow it wasn't!  I have been very satisfied with the speed of the drive.
  2479. Especially after hearing how thew were "slower than floppies."  In fact, the
  2480. only problem I have is Universal Item Selector doesn't display more than 400
  2481. files!  (Luckily Geneva's file selector isn't similariyly handicapped.)

  2497.         The ST Informer people are talking about updating UIS III.  I hope
  2498. they take CD-ROM into account!

  2500.         One thing that I do to make searching for things on CD-ROM easier is I
  2501. do a directory of each CD-ROM into a file.  Then when I'm looking for
  2502. something, I can search the file.  The best method I've found to do this,
  2503. unfortunately, involves a PC utility called WHEREIS.  Using PC Whereis (on a
  2504. PC naturally) you can get a listing of all files on the CD-ROM with the full
  2505. path listed at the end of the same line that has the filename on it.  That way
  2506. you can use a GREP-like search utility to get a listing of the files you're
  2507. interested in - each listed with their full path.
  2508.  
  2509.         We need an ST utility that will do a directory listing like this.
  2510. (With the CDAR-504 I've learned a whole new world of slow <g>)

  2671. please download the EPRO_20A.LZH patch file (just uploaded) and apply the
  2672. included patch. Owners of version 2.0A don't need this.

  2845. Just wanted to report that my newly aquired 2x CD-ROM drive works great with
  2846. Extendos.  Got the drive from MacWarehouse (item #BND0316) for $199 and was
  2847. sort-of-expecting to get an NEC210 drive as had been previously reported here
  2848. or in the other CD topic, but instead received a Toshiba XM4101TA (as listed
  2849. upon bootup w/Extendos).
  2850.  
  2851. Also works well with Audio CD Master (listening to the BLUES as I'm typing
  2852. this).  Can't report how it works with Extendos Pro because I haven't received
  2853. it yet (hint hint).
  2854.  
  2855. Anyway, its a nice unit with front controls, caddyless ejecting drawer, front
  2856. mini-jacks for audio as well as RCA jacks in back and can reportedly be used
  2857. as an audio-CD player independently, and SCSI in-out.
  2858.  
  2859. Hopefully, this will also work well with Photo CD, which I do not have as yet,
  2860. but is the main reason for this purchase.
  2861.  
  2862. Would appreciate comments from anyone with experience with this unit, good or

  2910. I called a NEC dealer here in Sudbury to ask about the 210, and they said
  2911. that's an old drive they don't carry any more; they have a 3XE for $730.  Is
  2912. that worth the extra expense (considering I could get the 210 from Toad for
  2913. about half that!)?  My impression from earlier messages is that the difference
  2914. between double and triple speed isn't that great.  (Especially since I only
  2915. have a 4/4 meg TT and won't be using it for huge color graphics or
  2916. animations.)

  2978. the most common cause of this problem.  I just subed files into my old set up,
  2979. swapping out old for new.

  2982. just can't make the audio player work either as ACC or PRG.  Seems to work but
  2983. when the window comes up it has my drive specified as Z and I can't change it.
  2984. When I click on play the little CD starts to spin, but the lights on my CD ROM
  2985. do not flash and I get no sound.
  2986.  
  2987. Do I start from scratch on the install, or is there an easy fix?

  3022. I got my Pro version today in the mail thanks; swapped the old for new and it
  3023. worked. The busy light flashes all the time except when the Cd is playing.  I
  3024. assume that is normal.  I'm listening to a Cd now.  At first I got no sound
  3025. but I forgot to turn on the amplifier that the Stereo out line was hooked up
  3026. to.  The Nec 210 doesn't seem to support software volume control but it has a
  3027. front accesible control.  John Mayall "Room to Move" wow haven't heard that in
  3028. 20 years!  What's next?  I'm ready for my next upgrade!

  3041. the Falcon with ExtendoDOS pro... by one Al Fasoldt, who used to play a
  3042. Steinway. Any relation?

  3044. Surpringly, since he mentioned newer personal computers can record CD quality
  3045. sound, he didn't slip in a mention of one we know very well in this capacity
  3046. ...and that also handles audio CDs when used in conjunction with the excellent
  3047. ExtenDOS Pro program.

  3143. into the programs.  The people at ST Informer have said that there's a planned
  3144. update for UIS III in the works.  Perhaps if we write to them, we can get the

  3146. ST.INFORMER.

  3238. However, it doesn't sound like your problem.  I just looked at your reg card
  3239. and I see you have a NEC 55 which is not auto-recognised.  You need to specify
  3240. a drive type (via the D= parameter).  Try D=20, 21, 22 or 23.  Please email me
  3241. with the results (good or bad).

  3365. I have ExtenDOS Pro and use it with the AUDIO_CD.ACC frequently.  I frequently
  3366. have the audio running a CD while I'm in a word processor or like now, in
  3367. Aladdin.  I have found that there is a lag in text display, presumably when
  3368. the accessory is upadating the track info etc.  So. . . the question arises;
  3369. "Would it be possible to revise the accessory program such that when you
  3370. closed the accessory the update query was turned OFF and subsequently
  3371. reactivated when the accessory was reopened?"  IMHO this would solve the
  3372. display lag with an audion CD running.  Please note that test is _not_
  3373. dropped, there is only a lag between the keyboard buffer and the text being
  3374. displayed.

  3414. Well,  I finally got a cable to hook up my CD-ROM.  ExtenDOS works great and
  3415. so does the drive!  When I hooked it up the Audio program did not work, but
  3416. when I told ExtendDOS to pretend it was a Apple Powerdrive, it worked.
  3417. Execept for the fast forward/fast backward.

  3432. The rumour is false.  The interal drive on my MegaSTE is formatted with ICD's
  3433. software ( I have a LINK on the external ) and has the Supra booter installed.
  3434. It runs just fine.

  3444.         I wasn't encouraging you to use AHDI, I was trying to find out what
  3445. your configuration was so that I could better advise you. The ICD software
  3446. should work fine.  I've also forgotten what kind of CD-ROM you've got.  If
  3447. it's the only external device it probably needs SCSI termination.  This may be
  3448. available inside the drive or you may need an external terminator.  What SCSI
  3449. ID numbers are you using for all the devices ?
  3450.  
  3451.         BTW, to have Aladdin retain your line spacing, put a space in front of
  3452. any lines you don't want wrapped, like your signature.

  3499. The drive is a nec 3xp it has switchs for termination and scsi 1 or 2 onback
  3500. the int drive is scsi 0 the cd is the edos default scsi 5. I have tried all
  3501. combos of ids and scsi 1 or 2 and a 2nd cd and 2nd link the drive(s) will not
  3502. answer the scsi query

  3510. Modules for a month or two I might be able to put the money together to buy
